11:1 | And when Rehoboam was come to Ierusalem, he gathered of the house of Dauid & Beniamin to the nombre of nine skore thousande choise men of warre to fyght wyth Israel, for to brynge the kyngdome agayne to Rehoboam. |
11:2 | But the worde of the Lorde came to Semeiah the man of God sayinge: |
11:3 | speake vnto Rehoboam the sonne of Salomon kynge of Iuda & to all Israell that are in Iuda, and to Beniamin, and saye: |
11:4 | thus sayth the Lorde. Go not nor fyght with your brethren: But returne euery man to his house, for thys thynge is done of me. And they obeyed the wordes of the Lord and returned from goynge agaynst Ieroboam. |
11:5 | And Rehoboam dwelte in Ierusalem, and buylt stronge cyties in Iuda: |
11:6 | as Bethlehem, Etam & Thekua: |
11:7 | Bethzur, Socho & Odollam: |
11:8 | Geth, Maresah & Ziph: |
11:9 | Adurahim, Lachis and Asecah: |
11:10 | Yarah Aialon & Hebron. Which were the stronge cytyes of Iuda and Beniamin. |
11:11 | And when he had repayred suche strong cytyes, he put capytaynes in them and store of vitayle, and of oyle and of wyne. |
11:12 | And he ordened in all cytyes shyldes & speares, & made them exceadyng stronge. And so Iuda and Beniamin were vnder hym. |
11:13 | And the priestes & the Leuytes that were in all Israell resorted to hym, oute of all theyr coastes. |
11:14 | In so much that the Leuites left theyr Suburbes & possessyons, and came to Iuda & Ierusalem: for Ieroboam and his sonnes had cast them oute from mynystrynge vnto the Lorde. |
11:15 | And he ordeyned hym priestes of hyl aulters bothe to felde deuylles and also to the calues which he had made. |
11:16 | And after them ther came of all the trybes of Israel (such as theyr hertes moued them to seke the Lorde God of Israel) to Ierusalem to offer vnto the Lorde God of theyr fathers. |
11:17 | And so they strengthed the kyngedome of Iuda, & made Rehoboam the sonne of Salomon myghty thre yeare long for thre yeare they walked in the way of Dauid and Salomon. |
11:18 | And Rehoboam toke hym Mahalath the doughter of Ierimoth the sonne of Dauid to wyfe, and Abihail the doughter of Eliab the sonne of Isai, |
11:19 | which bare hym chyldren: Ieus, Samariah, and Zaham. |
11:20 | And after her he toke Maacah the doughter of Absalom which bare hym Abiah, Etha, Ziza and Salumith. |
11:21 | But Rehoboam loued Maacah the doughter of Absalom aboue all hys other wyues and concubines for he toke .xviij. wyues & thre skore concubynes, and begat thre skore doughters, and .xxviij. sonnes |
11:22 | And Rehoboam made Abiah the sonne of Maacah the chefe ruler amonge hys brethren, for to make hym kynge. |
11:23 | And he played wysely & skatered of al hys children thorow out all the countreyes of Iuda & Beniamin in euerye strong cyty. And he gaue them aboundaunce of vytayle, and asked manye wyues. |
Matthew's Bible 1537
The Matthew Bible, also known as Matthew's Version, was first published in 1537 by John Rogers, under the pseudonym "Thomas Matthew". It combined the New Testament of William Tyndale, and as much of the Old Testament as he had been able to translate before being captured and put to death, with the translations of Myles Coverdale as to the balance of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, except the Apocryphal Prayer of Manasses. It is thus a vital link in the main sequence of English Bible translations.
