17:1Then Ahithophel sayd vnto Absalom: let me chose out, I pray the, twelue thousand men. And I will vp and folowe after Dauid by night.
17:2And I wil come vpon hym whyle he is werye and weake handed, and will feare him, that all the people that are wt hym shal flee. And so wyl I smyte the kinge onlye,
17:3and wyl brynge agayne al the people vnto the. And when al these men whyche thou sekest, are turned to the, and al the people shal haue rest.
17:4And the sayinge pleaseth Absalom well and all the elders of Israel.
17:5Then sayde Absalom: cal also Husai the Arachite and lette vs heare hys sentence.
17:6When Husai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake vnto him saying: Ahithophel hathe geuen suche counsel: whether it be best, we do after his saying or not, tell thou.
17:7Then sayde Husai to Absalom: the counsel that Ahitophel hath geuen, is not good at this tyme.
17:8For (sayd Husai) thou knowest thy father, & the men that are with him, how that they be strong men. And they be chafed in theyr mindes, euen as a beare robbed of her whelpes. And thy father is a man practised in warre and wyll not lye a nyghtes amonge the comen people.
17:9Beholde he lurketh now in some caue or in som other place. And therto though some of hys men be ouerthrowen at the fyrst brunt, yet they that heare it wil thinck the people that foloweth Absalom be put to the worsse.
17:10By the reason wherof the best men thou hast whose hertes are as the hertes of Lyons, shal shrynke therat. For all Israel knoweth that thy father is a man, and that they whyche be with hym be children of actiuite.
17:11But my counsel is, that all Israel be gathered vnto the, from Dan to Bersabe, as the sande of the sea in nombre, and that thou go to batayle in thyne owne person.
17:12And we wyll come vpon him in one place or other, where we shall fynde hym, and we wyl pitche a feld agaynst hym, euen as thycke as the dew falleth on the grounde. And there shall not one of them be lefte, nether he or any of all that are wyth him.
17:13Moreouer yf he take a towne then shall al the men of Israel brynge ropes to that cytye, and we wil drawe it into the ryuer, vntyl there be not one stone found vpon another.
17:14And Absalom & al the men of Israel sayd: that the counsel of Husai the Arachite was better then the counsel of Ahithophel. For it was euen the lordes determinacion to destroy the counsel of Ahithophel: whych was good that the Lorde myght brynge euyl vpon Absalom.
17:15Then sayd Husai vnto Sadock and Abiathar the pryestes: of thys and that maner dyd Ahithophel and the elders of Israel counsel Absalom. And thus and thus haue I counseled.
17:16Nowe therfore send quycklye and shew Dauid sayinge: tarye not al the night in the feldes of the wildernesse, but get the ouer, lest the kinge be deuoured, and al the people that are with him.
17:17Now Ionathas and Ahimaaz abode by the wel rogel: for they might not be sene to come into the cytie. And a wenche went and tolde them. And they to go and shewed kynge Dauid.
17:18Neuerthelesse there was a lad sawe them whyche tolde it to Absalom. But they went bothe of them awaie quickely and came to a mannes house in Bahurim, which had a well in his yarde, into whiche they went doune.
17:19And the wyfe toke and spred a couerlet on the toppe of the wel and strawed theron steaped barleye to drie. And the thinge was not spyed.
17:20And when Absaloms seruauntes came to the wyfe to the house and asked where one Ahimaaz and Ionathas were, the wyfe sayde vnto them: they be gone ouer the lyttel brocke of water. And when they had sought them, & coulde not fynde them, then they returned to Ierusalem.
17:21And as sone as they were departed, the other came out of the wel, and went and tolde kynge Dauid and sayde vnto him: vp and get you quyckely ouer the water for suche counsel hath Ahithophel geuen.
17:22Then Dauid arose and al the people that were with him, & they were come ouer Iordan be that it was daye, that there lacked not one of them, that was not come ouer Iordan.
17:23And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not folowed, he sadelleth his asse, and arose, & gate hym home to hys owne house and to his own cytye, and put his housholde in order and hanged him selfe and dyed, and was buryed in the sepulchre of hys father.
17:24Then Dauid came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed ouer Iordan, both he and all the men of Israel wt him.
17:25And Absalom made Amasa captayne of the hoste in stede of Ioab, whyche Amasa was a mannes sonne named Iethra a Iesrahelite that went into Abigail the doughter of Naah syster to Zaruiah Ioabs mother.
17:26And Israell and Absalom pytched in the lande of Galaad.
17:27And when Dauid was come to Mahanaim, Sobi the sonne of Naah out of Rabath the cyty of the children of Ammon, and Machir the sonne of Amiell out of Lodaber and Berzelai the Galaadite out of Rogelim,
17:28brought beddes, basens, and earthen vesselles: and also corne, barly, floure & parched corne, benes & ryce
17:29hony, butter, shepe and chese of knye, for Dauid & all the people that were with him to eate. For they supposed that the people shoulde be hongrye, faintye, and thurstye in the wildernesse.

Matthew's Bible 1537

The Matthew Bible, also known as Matthew's Version, was first published in 1537 by John Rogers, under the pseudonym "Thomas Matthew". It combined the New Testament of William Tyndale, and as much of the Old Testament as he had been able to translate before being captured and put to death, with the translations of Myles Coverdale as to the balance of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, except the Apocryphal Prayer of Manasses. It is thus a vital link in the main sequence of English Bible translations.
