| 20:1 | And there happened to be an vnthryftye felow named Seba the sonne of Bochri a man of Gemini whyche blewe a trompet and sayde: we haue no parte in Dauid, nor inheritaunce in the sonne of Isai, o Israel, let vs depart therfore euery man to hys tent. |
| 20:2 | And al Israel went from Dauid and folowed Seba the sonne of Bochri. But the men of Iuda claue fast vnto the kyng, from Iordan to Ierusalem. |
| 20:3 | And when Dauid was come to his house to Ierusalem, he toke the ten wyues hys concubynes that he had left behinde him to kepe the house, & put them inward and ministred all thynges vnto them: but laye no more with them. And so they were enclosed vnto the day of the death of them, and lyueth a wydowes lyfe. |
| 20:4 | Then sayde the kynge to Amasa: call me the men of Iuda together with in thre dayes and present thy selfe here. |
| 20:5 | And Amasa went together, the men of Iuda together: but taried longer then the tyme whiche was apoynted him. |
| 20:6 | Wherfore the kinge saide to Abisai: now shal Seba the sonne of Bochri be worsse to vs then Absalom. Take thou therfore thy Lordes seruauntes and folowe after him: lest he get him walled cyties and escaped vs. |
| 20:7 | And there went out after him Ioabs men and the Cerethites and the Phelethites and the men of myght. And they departed out of Ierusalem to folow after Semei the sonne of Bochri. |
| 20:8 | And when they were come to the great stone in Gabaon, Amasa met them. And Ioab had his garment that he had about him, gyrde vnto him, and had gyrde theron a knyfe ioyned fast to his loynes, in soche a shethe that as he went it fell some tymes out. |
| 20:9 | And Ioab sayde to Amasa: are all thynges in rest and peace my brother? And Ioab toke Amasa by the chynne wyth the ryghthande, as thoughe he woulde haue kyssed hym. |
| 20:10 | And Amasa toke no hede to the knyfe that was in Ioabs hand, with which Ioab smote hym in the shorte rybbes & shed out hys bowelles to the ground and smote him but one strocke, and he dyed. And then Ioab and Abisai his brother folowed after Seba the sonne of Bochri. |
| 20:11 | And one of Ioabs men that stode by hym sayde: what is he that he woulde be as Ioab, & what is he that he woulde be vnto Dauid in stede of Ioab? |
| 20:12 | And Amasa lay walowing in bloud in the middes of the waye. And there was a man, that sawe al the people stande styl. And when he saw that al that came by hym, stode styl, he rouled Amasa out of the waye into the felde, and cast a cloth vpon hym. |
| 20:13 | And as sone as he was tombeled out of the waye, all the people went after Ioab, to folowe after Seba the sonne of Bochri. |
| 20:14 | And he went thorow all the trybes of Israel vnto Abel, Bethmaacah and al Barim. And the people gathered vnto him and went also after him. |
| 20:15 | And they came & beseged him in Abel Bethmaacah. And they cast vp a banck agaynst the cytye. And it was beseged. Al the people that was with Ioab, labored busely to ouerthorow the wal. |
| 20:16 | Then cryed a wyse woman out of the cytie, heare heare, byd I praye you Ioab that he come hyther, that I maye speake with him. |
| 20:17 | When Ioab was come, the woman said: art thou Ioab? And Ioab answered: the am I. And she said to him: heare the wordes of thy handmaid: And he sayd: I am ready to heare. |
| 20:18 | And she sayde: it hath bene a comen sayinge in the olde tyme, men muste aske of Abel, and then go to and fynyshe the worcke. |
| 20:19 | Abel is one of the quyetest and faithfullest cities that are in Israel. And thou goest aboute to destroye a cytie that is as a mother in Israel. Why deuourest thou the enheritaunce of the Lorde. |
| 20:20 | And Ioab answered and sayde: God forbid, God forbid it me, that I should eyther deuoure or destroye it. |
| 20:21 | The matter is not so: But there is a man of mount Ephraim, Seba the sonne of Bochri by name, whiche hath lyfte vp his hand against king Dauid. Delyuer vs him only, and I will depart from the cytye. And the woman sayde vnto Ioab: Beholde, his head shalbe throwen thorow the walle to the. |
| 20:22 | And then the woman went vnto all the people in her wysedome. And they smote of the heade of Seba the sonne of Bochri, & cast it to Ioab. And he blewe a trompet, and they skatered from the cytye, euery man to his tent. And Ioab returned to Ierusalem vnto the kynge. |
| 20:23 | And Ioab was ouer al the hoste of Israel. And Baianah the sonne of Iehoiada was ouer the Cerethites and the Phelethites. |

Matthew's Bible 1537
The Matthew Bible, also known as Matthew's Version, was first published in 1537 by John Rogers, under the pseudonym "Thomas Matthew". It combined the New Testament of William Tyndale, and as much of the Old Testament as he had been able to translate before being captured and put to death, with the translations of Myles Coverdale as to the balance of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, except the Apocryphal Prayer of Manasses. It is thus a vital link in the main sequence of English Bible translations.
