The Great Bible 1539
8:1 | Then answered Baldad the Suhite, and sayde: |
8:2 | How longe wilt thou talke of soch thynges? how longe shall thy mouth speake so proude wordes? |
8:3 | Doth God peruerte the thynge that is laufull? Or doth the almyghtye destroye the thynge that is ryght? |
8:4 | For seyng that thy sonnes synned agaynst hym, dyd not he punysh them for theyr wyckednesse? |
8:5 | If thou woldest now resort vnto God by tymes, and make thyne humble prayer to the almyghty: |
8:6 | yf thou woldest lyue a pure and a godly lyfe: shulde he not awake vp vnto the immediatly, and geue the, the bewtye of ryghtewesnesse agayne? |
8:7 | In so moche, that where in so euer thou haddest lytle afore, thou shuldest now haue greate aboundaunce. |
8:8 | Enquere (I praye the) of them that haue bene before the, and search diligently amonge theyr fathers. |
8:9 | For we are but of yesterdaye, and consydre not, that oure dayes vpon earth are but a very shadowe. |
8:10 | Shall not they shewe the, and tell the, yee, and gladly confesse the same? |
8:11 | Maye a rysshe be grene without moystnesse? Or maye the grasse growe without water? |
8:12 | No: but (or euer it be shot forth, & or euer it be gathered) it withered, before eny other herbe. |
8:13 | Euen so goeth it with all them, that forget God: and euen thus also shall the ypocrites hope come to naught. |
8:14 | Hys confydence shalbe destroyed, and hys trust shalbe a spiders webbe. |
8:15 | He shall leane vpon his house, but it shall not stande: he shall holde hym fast by it, yet shall it not endure. |
8:16 | It is euen as a grene tree before the sonne, & shoteth forth the braunches in hys garden. |
8:17 | It taketh many rotes by a well syde, in so moch that it is lyke an house of stones. |
8:18 | But yf it be taken out of hys place, euery man denyeth it, sayenge: I knowe the not. |
8:19 | Lo, thus is it with him, that reioyseth in his awne doynges: and as for other, they growe out of the earth. |
8:20 | Behold, God will not cast awaye a vertuous man, nether wyll he helpe the vngodly. |
8:21 | Thy mouth shall he fyll with laughing, and thy lyppes with gladnesse. |
8:22 | They also that hate the, shalbe confounded, and the dwellinge of the vngodly shall come to naught. |
The Great Bible 1539
The Great Bible of 1539 was the first authorized edition of the Bible in English, authorized by King Henry VIII of England to be read aloud in the church services of the Church of England. The Great Bible was prepared by Myles Coverdale, working under commission of Thomas, Lord Cromwell, Secretary to Henry VIII and Vicar General. In 1538, Cromwell directed the clergy to provide "one book of the bible of the largest volume in English, and the same set up in some convenient place within the said church that ye have care of, whereas your parishioners may most commodiously resort to the same and read it."
