John - Chapter: 11
11:1 | Now a certaine man was sicke, named Lazarus of Bethanie, the towne of Mary, and her sister Martha. |
11:2 | (It was that Mary which anoynted the Lord with oyntment, and wiped his feete with her haire, whose brother Lazarus was sicke.) |
11:3 | Therefore his sister sent vnto him, saying, Lord, behold, hee whom thou louest, is sicke. |
11:4 | When Iesus heard that, hee said, This sicknesse is not vnto death, but for the glory of God, that the Sonne of God might be glorified thereby. |
11:5 | Now Iesus loued Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. |
11:6 | When he had heard therefore that he was sicke, he abode two dayes still in the same place where he was. |
11:7 | Then after that, saith hee to his disciples, Let vs go into Iudea againe. |
11:8 | His disciples say vnto him, Master, the Iewes of late sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither againe? |
11:9 | Iesus answered, Are there not twelue houres in the day? If any man walke in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. |
11:10 | But if a man walke in the night, hee stumbleth, because there is no light in him. |
11:11 | These things said hee, and after that, hee saith vnto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth, but I goe, that I may awake him out of sleepe. |
11:12 | Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleepe, he shall doe well. |
11:13 | Howbeit Iesus spake of his death: but they thought that hee had spoken of taking of rest in sleepe. |
11:14 | Then saide Iesus vnto them plainly, Lazarus is dead: |
11:15 | And I am glad for your sakes, that I was not there (to the intent yee may beleeue:) Neuerthelesse, let vs goe vnto him. |
11:16 | Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, vnto his fellow disciples, Let vs also goe, that we may die with him. |
11:17 | Then when Iesus came, hee found that hee had lien in the graue foure dayes already. |
11:18 | (Now Bethanie was nigh vnto Hierusalem, about fifteene furlongs off:) |
11:19 | And many of the Iewes came to Martha, and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. |
11:20 | Then Martha, as soone as shee heard that Iesus was comming, went and met him: but Mary sate still in the house. |
11:21 | Then saide Martha vnto Iesus, Lord, if thou hadst bene here, my brother had not died. |
11:22 | But I know, that euen now, whatsoeuer thou wilt aske of God, God will giue it thee. |
11:23 | Iesus saith vnto her, Thy brother shall rise againe. |
11:24 | Martha sayeth vnto him, I know that he shall rise againe in the resurrection at the last day. |
11:25 | Iesus said vnto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: hee that beleeueth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he liue. |
11:26 | And whosoeuer liueth, and beleeueth in mee, shall neuer die. Beleeuest thou this? |
11:27 | She saith vnto him, Yea Lord, I beleeue that thou art the Christ the Sonne of God, which should come into the world. |
11:28 | And when shee had so said, shee went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. |
11:29 | Assoone as she heard that, she arose quickely, and came vnto him. |
11:30 | Now Iesus was not yet come into the towne, but was in that place where Martha met him. |
11:31 | The Iewes then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose vp hastily, and went out, followed her, saying, Shee goeth vnto the graue, to weepe there. |
11:32 | Then when Mary was come where Iesus was, and saw him, shee fell downe at his feete, saying vnto him, Lord, if thou hadst beene here, my brother had not dyed. |
11:33 | When Iesus therefore sawe her weeping, and the Iewes also weeping which came with her, hee groned in the Spirit, and was troubled, |
11:34 | And said, Where haue ye laid him? They say vnto him, Lord, come, & see. |
11:35 | Iesus wept. |
11:36 | Then said the Iewes, Behold, how he loued him. |
11:37 | And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blinde, haue caused that euen this man should not haue died? |
11:38 | Iesus therefore againe groning in himselfe, commeth to the graue. It was a caue, and a stone lay vpon it. |
11:39 | Iesus said, Take yee away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, sayth vnto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath beene dead foure dayes. |
11:40 | Iesus saith vnto her, Said I not vnto thee, that if thou wouldst beleeue, thou shouldest see the glory of God? |
11:41 | Then they tooke away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Iesus lift vp his eyes, and said, Father, I thanke thee, that thou hast heard me. |
11:42 | And I knewe that thou hearest me alwayes: but because of the people which stand by, I said it, that they may beleeue that thou hast sent me. |
11:43 | And when hee thus had spoken, he cryed with a loude voice, Lazarus, come foorth. |
11:44 | And he that was dead, came forth, bound hand & foot with graue-clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Iesus saith vnto them, Loose him, and let him goe. |
11:45 | Then many of the Iewes which came to Mary, and had seene the things which Iesus did, beleeued on him. |
11:46 | But some of them went their wayes to the Pharises, and tolde them what things Iesus had done. |
11:47 | Then gathered ye chiefe Priests and the Pharises a councell, and said, What doe wee? for this man doeth many miracles. |
11:48 | If we let him thus alone, all men will beleeue on him, and the Romanes shall come, and take away both our place and nation. |
11:49 | And one of them named Caiaphas, being the high Priest that same yeere, said vnto them, Ye know nothing at all, |
11:50 | Nor consider that it is expedient for vs, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. |
11:51 | And this spake he not of himselfe: but being high Priest that yeere, he prophecied that Iesus should die for that nation: |
11:52 | And not for that nation only, but that also hee should gather together in one, the children of God that were scattered abroad. |
11:53 | Then from that day foorth, they tooke counsell together for to put him to death. |
11:54 | Iesus therefore walked no more openly among the Iewes: but went thence vnto a countrey neere to the wildernesse, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. |
11:55 | And the Iewes Passeouer was nigh at hand, and many went out of the countrey vp to Hierusalem before the Passeouer to purifie themselues. |
11:56 | Then sought they for Iesus, and spake among themselues, as they stood in the Temple, What thinke ye, that he will not come to the feast? |
11:57 | Now both the chiefe Priests and the Pharises had giuen a commandement, that if any man knew where hee were, he should shew it, that they might take him. |
11:1 | There laye one sicke, named Lazarus of Bethania, in ye towne of Mary & hir sister Martha. |
11:2 | It was yt Mary which anoynted ye LORDE wt oyntment, & dryed his fete wt hir heer, whose brother Lazarus laye sicke.) |
11:3 | The sent his sisters vnto hi, & sayde: LORDE, beholde, he who thou louest lyeth sicke. |
11:4 | Wha Iesus herde that, he sayde: This sicknesse is not vnto death, but for the prayse of God, yt the sonne of God maye be praysed there thorow. |
11:5 | Iesus loued Martha & hir sister, & Lazarus. |
11:6 | Now wha he herde that he was sicke, he abode two dayes in ye place where he was. |
11:7 | Afterwarde sayde he vnto his disciples: Let vs go agayne i to Iewry. |
11:8 | His disciples sayde vnto him: Master, lately wolde the Iewes haue stoned the, & wilt thou go thither agayne: |
11:9 | Iesus answered: Are there not twolue houres in ye daye? He yt walketh in the daye, stombleth not, for he seyeth ye light of this worlde. |
11:10 | But he that walketh in the night, stobleth: for there is no light in him. |
11:11 | This he spake, & after warde sayde he vnto the: Lazarus or frende slepeth, but I go to wake him out of slepe. |
11:12 | The sayde his disciples: LORDE, yf he slepe, he shal do well ynough |
11:13 | (Howbeyt Iesus spake of his death but they thought yt he had spoke of ye bodely slepe.) |
11:14 | The sayde Iesus vnto the planely: Lazarus is deed, |
11:15 | & I am glad for yor sakes, yt I was not there, that ye maye beleue. Neuertheles let vs go vnto hi. |
11:16 | The sayde Thomas (which is called Didimus) vnto ye disciples: Let vs go also, yt we maye dye wt hi. |
11:17 | The came Iesus, & founde yt he had lyen in ye graue foure dayes allready. |
11:18 | Bethanye was nye vnto Ierusale, aboute fiftene furloges. |
11:19 | And many of the Iewes were come to Martha & Mary, to coforte the ouer their brother. |
11:20 | Now wha Martha herde yt Iesus came, she wete to mete him. But Mary satt styl at home. |
11:21 | The sayde Martha vnto Iesus: LORDE, yf thou haddest bene here, my brother had not bene deed. |
11:22 | But neuertheles I knowe also, what soeuer thou axest of God, that God wyl geue it the. |
11:23 | Iesus sayde vnto her: Thy brother shal ryse agayne. |
11:24 | Martha sayde vnto hi: I knowe, yt he shal ryse agayne in the resurreccion at ye last daye. |
11:25 | Iesus saide vnto her: I am the resurreccion & the life He yt beleueth on me, shal lyue, though he were deed allready: |
11:26 | & whosoeuer lyueth and beleueth on me, shal neuer dye. Beleuest thou this? |
11:27 | She saide vnto him: Yee LORDE, I beleue, that thou art Christ the sonne of God, which shulde come into the worlde. |
11:28 | And wha she had sayde this, she wete hir waye, & called Mary hir sister secretly, & saide: The maister is come, & calleth for the. |
11:29 | She whan she herde that, rose vp quyckly, and came vnto him: |
11:30 | For Iesus was not yet come in to ye towne, but was yet in the place, where Martha met him. |
11:31 | The Iewes that were wt her in the house and comforted her, whan they sawe Mary, that she rose vp haistely, & wente out, they folowed her, & saide: She goeth to the graue, to wepe there. |
11:32 | Now wha Mary came where Iesus was & sawe him, she fell downe at his fete, & sayde vnto hi: LORDE, yf thou haddest bene here, my brother had not bene deed. |
11:33 | Wha Iesus sawe her wepe, & the Iewes wepinge also yt came wt her, he groned in the sprete, & was sory wt in himself, |
11:34 | & sayde: Where haue ye layed him? They sayde: LORDE come, & se it. |
11:35 | And Iesus wepte. |
11:36 | Then sayde ye Iewes: Beholde how he loued him. |
11:37 | But some of the saide: Coulde no the which opened the eyes of ye blynde, haue made also, that this ma shulde not haue dyed? |
11:38 | But Iesus groned agayne in himself, and came to the graue. It was a caue, and a stone layed on it. |
11:39 | Iesus saide: Take awaye ye stone. Martha the sister of him yt was deed, saide vnto hi: LORDE, he stynketh allready, for he hath bene deed foure dayes. |
11:40 | Iesus sayde vnto her: Sayde I not vnto the, that yf thou dyddest beleue, thou shuldest se the glory of God? |
11:41 | Then toke they awaye the stone, where the deed laye. Iesus lift vp his eyes, and sayde: Father, I thake ye, that thou hast herde me. |
11:42 | Howbeit I knowe, that thou hearest me allwaye: but because of ye people that stonde by, I sayde it, that they maye beleue, that thou hast sent me. |
11:43 | Whan he had sayde this, he cryed loude: Lazarus come forth. |
11:44 | And ye deed came forth bounde hande & fote wt graue clothes, & his face bounde wt a napkyn. Iesus sayde vnto the: Lowse him, & let him go. |
11:45 | Many now of ye Iewes which mere come vnto Mary, and sawe what Iesus dyd, beleued on him. |
11:46 | But some of the wente their waye vnto the pharises, and tolde the what Iesus had done. |
11:47 | Then the hye prestes, and the pharises gathered a councell, and sayde: What do we? This man doth many tokens. |
11:48 | Yf we let him go thus, all me wyl beleue in him: the shal the Romaynes come, and take awaye oure londe and people. |
11:49 | But one of them, named Caiphas, which was hye prest that same yeare, sayde vnto them: Ye knowe nothinge nether considre ye eny thinge at all. |
11:50 | It is better for us that one ma dye for the people, then that all the people shulde perishe. |
11:51 | This spake he not of himself, but for so moch as he was hye prest of the same yeare, he prophecied. For Iesus was for to dye for the people, |
11:52 | and not for the people onely, but that he shulde gather together the children of God, which were scatered abrode: |
11:53 | From that daye forth they toke coucell, how they might put him to death. |
11:54 | Iesus walked nomore openly amonge the Iewes, but wente from thence in to a countre by the wyldernesse, to a cite called Ephraim, & there had he his beynge with his disciples. |
11:55 | The Iewes Easter was nye at hande. And there wente vp many to Ierusale out of that countre before ye Easter, to purifye them selues. |
11:56 | Then stode they vp, and axed after Iesus, and spake amonge them selues in the temple: What thynke ye, that he cometh not to ye feast? |
11:57 | The hye prestes & pharises had geuen a commaundement, that yf eny man knewe where he were, he shulde shewe it, that they might take him. |
11:1 | and alle thingis what euer Joon seide of this, weren sothe. And many bileueden in hym. |
11:2 | And ther was a sijk man, Lazarus of Bethanye, of the castel of Marie and Martha, hise sistris. |
11:3 | And it was Marye, which anoyntide the Lord with oynement, and wipte hise feet with hir heeris, whos brother Lazarus was sijk. |
11:4 | Therfor hise sistris senten to hym, and seide, Lord, lo! he whom thou louest, is sijk. |
11:5 | And Jhesus herde, and seide to hem, This syknesse is not to the deth, but for the glorie of God, that mannus sone be glorified bi hym. |
11:6 | And Jhesus louyde Martha, and hir sistir Marie, and Lazarus. |
11:7 | Therfor whanne Jhesus herde, that he was sijk, thanne he dwellide in the same place twei daies. |
11:8 | And after these thingis he seide to hise disciplis, Go we eft in to Judee. |
11:9 | The disciplis seien to hym, Maister, now the Jewis souyten for to stoone thee, and eft goist thou thidir? |
11:10 | Jhesus answerde, Whether ther ben not twelue ouris of the dai? If ony man wandre in the dai, he hirtith not, for he seeth the liyt of this world. |
11:11 | But if he wandre in the niyt, he stomblith, for liyt is not in him. |
11:12 | He seith these thingis, and aftir these thingis he seith to hem, Lazarus, oure freend, slepith, but Y go to reise hym fro sleep. |
11:13 | Therfor hise disciplis seiden, Lord, if he slepith, he schal be saaf. |
11:14 | But Jhesus hadde seid of his deth; but thei gessiden, that he seide of slepyng of sleep. |
11:15 | Thanne therfor Jhesus seide to hem opynli, Lazarus is deed; |
11:16 | and Y haue ioye for you, that ye bileue, for Y was not there; but go we to hym. |
11:17 | Therfor Thomas, that is seid Didymus, seide to euen disciplis, Go we also, that we dien with hym. |
11:18 | And so Jhesus cam, and foond hym hauynge thanne foure daies in the graue. |
11:19 | And Bethany was bisidis Jerusalem, as it were fiftene furlongis. |
11:20 | And many of the Jewis camen to Mary and Martha, to coumforte hem of her brothir. |
11:21 | Therfor as Martha herde, that Jhesu cam, sche ran to hym; but Mary sat at home. |
11:22 | Therfor Martha seide to Jhesu, Lord, if thou haddist be here, my brother hadde not be deed. |
11:23 | But now Y woot, that what euere thingis thou schalt axe of God, God schal yyue to thee. |
11:24 | Jhesus seith to hir, Thi brother schal rise ayen. |
11:25 | Martha seith to hym, Y woot, that he schal rise ayen in the ayen risyng in the laste dai. |
11:26 | Jhesus seith to hir, Y am ayen risyng and lijf; he that bileueth in me, yhe, thouy he be deed, |
11:27 | he schal lyue; and ech that lyueth, and bileueth in me, schal not die with outen ende. Bileuest thou this thing? |
11:28 | Sche seith to hym, Yhe, Lord, Y haue bileued, that thou art Crist, the sone of the lyuynge God, that hast come in to this world. |
11:29 | And whanne sche hadde seid this thing, sche wente, and clepide Marie, hir sistir, in silence, and seide, The maister cometh, and clepith thee. |
11:30 | Sche, as sche herd, aroos anoon, and cam to hym. |
11:31 | And Jhesus cam not yit `in to the castel, but he was yit in that place, where Martha hadde comun ayens hym. |
11:32 | Therfor the Jewis that weren with hir in the hous, and coumfortiden hir, whanne thei sayn Marie, that sche roos swithe, and wente out, thei sueden hir, and seiden, For sche goith to the graue, to wepe there. |
11:33 | But whanne Marie was comun where Jhesus was, sche seynge hym felde doun to his feet, and seide to hym, Lord, if thou haddist be here, my brother hadde not be deed. |
11:34 | And therfor whanne Jhesu saiy hir wepyng, and the Jewis wepynge that weren with hir, he `made noise in spirit, and troblide hym silf, |
11:35 | and seide, Where han ye leid hym? Thei seien to hym, Lord, come, and se. |
11:36 | And Jhesus wepte. Therfor the Jewis seiden, |
11:37 | Lo! hou he louede hym. |
11:38 | And summe of hem seiden, Whethir this man that openyde the iyen of the borun blynde man, myyte not make that this schulde not die? |
11:39 | Therfor Jhesus eft makynge noise in hym silf, cam to the graue. And there was a denne, and a stoon was leid theronne. |
11:40 | And Jhesus seith, Take ye awey the stoon. Martha, the sistir of hym that was deed, seith to hym, Lord, he stynkith now, for he hath leye foure daies. |
11:41 | Jhesus seith to hir, Haue Y not seid to thee, that if thou bileuest, thou schalt se the glorie of God? |
11:42 | Therfor thei token awei the stoon. And Jhesus lifte vp hise iyen, and seide, Fadir, Y do thankyngis to thee, for thou hast herd me; and Y wiste, |
11:43 | that thou euermore herist me, but for the puple that stondith aboute, Y seide, that thei bileue, that thou hast sent me. |
11:44 | Whanne he hadde seid these thingis, he criede with a greet vois, Lazarus, come thou forth. |
11:45 | And anoon he that was deed, cam out, boundun the hondis and feet with boondis, and his face boundun with a sudarie. And Jhesus seith to hem, Vnbynde ye hym, and suffre ye hym to go forth. |
11:46 | Therfor many of the Jewis that camen to Marie and Martha, and seyn what thingis Jhesus dide, bileueden in hym. |
11:47 | But summe of hem wente to the Farisees, and seiden to hem, what thingis Jhesus `hadde don. |
11:48 | Therfor the bischopis and the Farisees gadriden a counsel ayens Jhesu, and seiden, What do we? for this man doith many myraclis. |
11:49 | If we leeue hym thus, alle men schulen bileue in hym; and Romayns schulen come, and schulen take our place and oure folk. |
11:50 | But oon of hem, Cayfas bi name, whanne he was bischop of that yeer, seide to hem, |
11:51 | Ye witen nothing, ne thenken, that it spedith to you, that o man die for the puple, and that al the folc perische not. |
11:52 | But he seide not this thing of hym silf, but whanne he was bischop of that yeer, he prophesiede, that Jhesu was to die for the folc, |
11:53 | and not oneli for the folc, but that he schulde gadere in to oon the sones of God that weren scaterid. |
11:54 | Therfor fro that day thei souyten for to sle hym. |
11:55 | Therfor Jhesus walkide not thanne opynli among the Jewis; but he wente in to a cuntre bisidis desert, in to a citee, that is seid Effren, and there he dwellide with hise disciplis. |
11:56 | And the pask of the Jewis was niy, and many of the cuntrey wenten vp to Jerusalem bifor the pask, to halewe hem silf. |
11:57 | Therfor thei souyten Jhesu, and spaken togidere, stondynge in the temple, What gessen ye, for he cometh not to the feeste day? For the bischopis and Farisees hadden youun a maundement, that if ony man knowe where he is, that he schewe, that thei take hym. |
