Matthew - Chapter: 23

23:1Then Jesus spake to the multitudes, and to his disciples,
23:2saying, `On the seat of Moses sat down the scribes and the Pharisees;
23:3all, then, as much as they may say to you to observe, observe and do, but according to their works do not, for they say, and do not;
23:4for they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them.
23:5`And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments,
23:6they love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
23:7and the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:8`And ye -- ye may not be called Rabbi, for one is your director -- the Christ, and all ye are brethren;
23:9and ye may not call `any' your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens,
23:10nor may ye be called directors, for one is your director -- the Christ.
23:11And the greater of you shall be your ministrant,
23:12and whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.
23:13`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter.
23:14`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment.
23:15`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen -- ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.
23:16`Wo to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary -- is debtor!
23:17Fools and blind! for which `is' greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold?
23:18`And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it -- is debtor!
23:19Fools and blind! for which `is' greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift?
23:20`He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it;
23:21and he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it;
23:22and he who did swear by the heaven, doth swear by the throne of God, and by Him who is sitting upon it.
23:23`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law -- the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved `you' to do, and those not to neglect.
23:24`Blind guides! who are straining out the gnat, and the camel are swallowing.
23:25`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence.
23:26`Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean.
23:27`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness;
23:28so also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
23:29`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,
23:30and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
23:31So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;
23:32and ye -- ye fill up the measure of your fathers.
23:33`Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?
23:34`Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city;
23:35that on you may come all the righteous blood being poured out on the earth from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar:
23:36verily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.
23:37`Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will.
23:38Lo, left desolate to you is your house;
23:39for I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed `is' he who is coming in the name of the Lord.'

23:1Then spake Iesus to the people and to his disciples
23:2sayinge. The Scribes and the Pharises sit in Moses seate.
23:3All therfore whatsoever they byd you observe that observe and do: but after their workes do not:
23:4For they saye and do not. Ye and they bynde hevy burthes and grevous to be borne and ley the on menes shulders: but they themsylfes will not heave at them with one of their fyngers.
23:5All their workes they do for to be sene of me. They set abroade their philateries and make large borders on there garmetes
23:6and love to sit vppermooste at feastes and to have the chefe seates in the synagoges
23:7and gretinges in the marketes and to be called of men Rabi.
23:8But ye shall not suffre youre selves to be called Rabi. For one is youre master that is to wyt Christ and all ye are brethre.
23:9And call no man youre father vpon the erth for there is but one youre father and he is in heven.
23:10Be not called masters for there is but one youre master and he is Christ.
23:11He that is greatest amoge you shalbe youre seruaunte.
23:12But whosoever exalteth himsilfe shalbe brought lowe. And he yt hubleth himsilfe shalbe exalted.
23:13Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites for ye shutte vp the kyngdome of heve before men: ye youre selves goo not in nether suffre ye them that come to enter in.
23:14Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites: ye devoure widdowes houses and that vnder a coloure of praying longe prayers: wherfore ye shall receave greater damnacion.
23:15Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites which compasse see and londe to bringe one in to youre belefe: and when he ys brought ye make him two folde more the chylde of hell then ye youre selves are.
23:16Wo be vnto you blynd gides which saye whosoever sweare by the teple it is no thinge: but whosoever sweare by the golde of the temple he offendeth.
23:17Ye foles and blinde? whether is greater the golde or the teple that sanctifieth ye golde.
23:18And whosoever sweareth by the aulter it is nothinge: but whosoever sweareth by ye offeringe yt lyeth on ye aultre offendeth.
23:19Ye foles and blinde: whether is greater ye offeringe or ye aultre which sanctifieth ye offeringe?
23:20Whosoever therfore sweareth by ye aultre sweareth by it and by all yt there on is.
23:21And whosoever sweareth by the teple sweareth by it and by hym yt dwelleth therin.
23:22And he that sweareth by heve swereth by the seate of God and by hym that sytteth theron.
23:23Wo be to you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites which tythe mynt annyse and comen and leave the waygthtyer mattres of ye lawe vndone: iudgemet mercy and fayth. These ought ye to have done and not to have left the othre vndone.
23:24Ye blinde gydes which strayne out a gnat and swalowe a cammyll.
23:25Wo be to you scribes and pharises ypocrites which make clene ye vtter syde of the cuppe and of the platter: but within they are full of brybery and excesse.
23:26Thou blinde Pharise clense fyrst the outsyde of the cup and platter that the ynneside of them maye be clene also.
23:27Wo be to you Scribe and Pharises ypocrite for ye are lyke vnto paynted tombes which appere beautyfull outwarde: but are wt in full of deed bones and of all fylthynes.
23:28So are ye for outwarde ye appere righteous vnto me when within ye are full of ypocrisie and iniquite.
23:29Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites: ye bylde the tombes of the Prophetes and garnisshe the sepulchres of the righteous
23:30and saye: Yf we had bene in the dayes of oure fathers we wolde not have bene parteners with them in the bloud of the Prophetes.
23:31So then ye be witnesses vnto youre selfes that ye are the chyldren of them which killed the prophetes.
23:32Fulfill ye lyke wyse the measure of youre fathers.
23:33Yee serpentes and generacion of vipers how shuld ye scape ye dapnacio of hell?
23:34Wherfore beholde I sende vnto you prophetes wyse men and scribes and of the ye shall kyll and crucifie: and of the ye shall scourge in youre synagoges and persecute from cyte to cyte
23:35that vpon you maye come all the righteous bloude that was sheed vpon the erth fro the bloud of righteous Abell vnto ye bloud of zacharias the sonne of Barachias who ye slewe betwene the teple and ye altre.
23:36Verely I say vnto you all these thinges shall light vpon this generacion.
23:37Hierusalem hierusalem which kyllest prophetes and stonest the which are sent to the: how often wolde I have gadered thy chyldren to gether as the henne gadreth her chickes vnder her winges but ye wolde not:
23:38Beholde youre habitacio shalbe lefte vnto you desolate.
23:39For I saye to you ye shall not se me heceforthe tyll that ye saye: blessed is he that cometh in the name of ye Lorde.

23:1Then spake Iesus vnto ye people and to his disciples,
23:2and sayde: The scrybes & Pharises are set downe vpon Moses seate.
23:3Therfore whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and do, but after their workes shal ye not do,
23:4for they saye & do not. For they bynde heuy and intollerable burthens, and laye them vpon mens shulders: But they them selues wil not heaue at them with one of their fyngers.
23:5All their workes do they to be sene of men. They set abrode their Philateries, and make large borders vpon their garmentes,
23:6and loue to syt vppermost at the table, and to haue the chefe seates in the synagoges,
23:7and loue to be saluted in the market, and to be called of me Rabbi.
23:8But ye shal not suffre youre selues to be called Rabbi, for one is youre master, euen Christ, and all ye are brethren.
23:9And call no man father vpon earth, for one is youre father, which is in heaue.
23:10And ye shal not suffre youre selues to be called masters, for one is youre master, namely, Christ.
23:11He that is greatest amoge you, shalbe youre seruaunt.
23:12For who so exalteth himself, shal be brought lowe: and he that humbleth himself, shalbe exalted.
23:13Wo vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, that shut vp the kyngdome of heauen before men: Ye come not in youre selues, nether suffre ye them to enter, that wolde be in.
23:14Wo vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, that deuoure wyddowes houses, and that vnder the culoure of prayenge longe prayers, therfore shal ye receaue ye greater damnacion.
23:15Wo vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, which compasse see and lode to make one Proselyte: and whan he is become one, ye make of him a childe of hell, two folde more then ye youre selues are.
23:16Wo vnto you blyndegydes, which saye: Who so euer sweareth by the temple, that is nothinge: but who so euer sweareth by the golde of the temple, he is giltie.
23:17Ye fooles and blynde, whether is greater? the golde, or the teple that sanctifieth the golde?
23:18And who so euer sweareth by the altare, that is nothinge: but who so euer sweareth by the offeringe that is vpo it, he is giltye.
23:19Ye fooles and blynde, whether is greater? the offeringe, or the altare that sanctifieth the offerynge?
23:20Therfore who so sweareth by the altare, sweareth by the same, and by all that is theron:
23:21and who so sweareth by the temple, sweareth by the same, and by him that dwelleth therin.
23:22And who so sweareth by heauen, sweareth by the seate of God, and by him that sytteth theron.
23:23Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, which tythe Mynt, Anyse and Commyn, and leaue the waightier matters of the lawe behynde: namely, iudgment, mercy, and fayth. These ought to haue bene done, and not to leaue the other behynde.
23:24O ye blynde gydes, which strayne out a gnat, but swalowe vp a Camell.
23:25Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye Ypocrytes, which make cleane the vttersyde of the cuppe and platter, but within are ye full of robbery and excesse.
23:26Thou blynde Pharise, clense first the in syde of the cuppe and platter, that the out syde maye be cleane also.
23:27Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye Ypocrites, which be like vnto paynted Sepulcres, that appeare beutyfull outwarde, but within they are full of deed mens bones and all fylthines.
23:28Euen so are ye also: Outwarde ye appeare righteous vnto men, but within ye are full of ypocrisye and iniquyte.
23:29Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrites, which buylde the tombes of the prophetes, and garnysh the sepulcres of the righteous,
23:30and saye: Yf we had bene in oure fathers tyme, we wolde not haue bene partakers with them in the bloude of the prophetes.
23:31Therfore ye be wytnesses vnto youre selues, that ye are the children of them, which slew the prophetes.
23:32Go to, fulfyll ye also the measure of youre fathers.
23:33O ye serpentes, O ye generacion of vypers, how wyl ye escape the damnacion of Hell?
23:34Therfore beholde, I sende vnto you prophetes and wysemen, and scrybes, and some of them shal ye kyll and crucifye, and some of them shal ye scourge in youre synagoges, and persecute them from cite to cite:
23:35that vpon you maye come all the righteous bloude which hath bene shed vpon ye earth, from the bloude of righteous Abel, vnto ye bloude of Zachary ye sonne of Barachias, whom ye slew betwene the temple and the altare.
23:36Verely I saye vnto you: All these thinges shal light vpo this generacion.
23:37O Ierusalem Ierusalem, thou that slayest the prophetes, and stonest them that are sent vnto the: How oft wolde I haue gathered thy children together, euen as the henne gathereth hir chekens vnder hir wynges, and ye wolde not?
23:38Beholde, youre habitacion shalbe left vnto you desolate.
23:39For I saye vnto you: Ye shal not se me hence forth, tyll ye saye: Blessed be he, that commeth in the name of the LORDE.
