Matthew - Chapter: 26
26:1 | And it came to pass, when Jesus finished all these words, he said to his disciples, |
26:2 | `Ye have known that after two days the passover cometh, and the Son of Man is delivered up to be crucified.' |
26:3 | Then were gathered together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, to the court of the chief priest who was called Caiaphas; |
26:4 | and they consulted together that they might take Jesus by guile, and kill `him', |
26:5 | and they said, `Not in the feast, that there may not be a tumult among the people.' |
26:6 | And Jesus having been in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, |
26:7 | there came to him a woman having an alabaster box of ointment, very precious, and she poured on his head as he is reclining (at meat). |
26:8 | And having seen `it', his disciples were much displeased, saying, `To what purpose `is' this waste? |
26:9 | for this ointment could have been sold for much, and given to the poor.' |
26:10 | And Jesus having known, said to them, `Why do ye give trouble to the woman? for a good work she wrought for me; |
26:11 | for the poor always ye have with you, and me ye have not always; |
26:12 | for she having put this ointment on my body -- for my burial she did `it'. |
26:13 | Verily I say to you, Wherever this good news may be proclaimed in the whole world, what this `one' did shall also be spoken of -- for a memorial of her.' |
26:14 | Then one of the twelve, who is called Judas Iscariot, having gone unto the chief priests, said, |
26:15 | `What are ye willing to give me, and I will deliver him up to you?' and they weighed out to him thirty silverlings, |
26:16 | and from that time he was seeking a convenient season to deliver him up. |
26:17 | And on the first `day' of the unleavened food came the disciples near to Jesus, saying to him, `Where wilt thou `that' we may prepare for thee to eat the passover?' |
26:18 | and he said, `Go away to the city, unto such a one, and say to him, The Teacher saith, My time is nigh; near thee I keep the passover, with my disciples;' |
26:19 | and the disciples did as Jesus appointed them, and prepared the passover. |
26:20 | And evening having come, he was reclining (at meat) with the twelve, |
26:21 | and while they are eating, he said, `Verily I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.' |
26:22 | And being grieved exceedingly, they began to say to him, each of them, `Is it I, Sir?' |
26:23 | And he answering said, `He who did dip with me the hand in the dish, he will deliver me up; |
26:24 | the Son of Man doth indeed go, as it hath been written concerning him, but wo to that man through whom the Son of Man is delivered up! good it were for him if that man had not been born.' |
26:25 | And Judas -- he who delivered him up -- answering said, `Is it I, Rabbi?' He saith to him, `Thou hast said.' |
26:26 | And while they were eating, Jesus having taken the bread, and having blessed, did brake, and was giving to the disciples, and said, `Take, eat, this is my body;' |
26:27 | and having taken the cup, and having given thanks, he gave to them, saying, `Drink ye of it -- all; |
26:28 | for this is my blood of the new covenant, that for many is being poured out -- to remission of sins; |
26:29 | and I say to you, that I may not drink henceforth on this produce of the vine, till that day when I may drink it with you new in the reign of my Father.' |
26:30 | And having sung a hymn, they went forth to the mount of the Olives; |
26:31 | then saith Jesus to them, `All ye shall be stumbled at me this night; for it hath been written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad; |
26:32 | but, after my having risen, I will go before you to Galilee.' |
26:33 | And Peter answering said to him, `Even if all shall be stumbled at thee, I will never be stumbled.' |
26:34 | Jesus said to him, `Verily I say to thee, that, this night, before cock-crowing, thrice thou wilt deny me.' |
26:35 | Peter saith to him, `Even if it may be necessary for me to die with thee, I will not deny thee;' in like manner also said all the disciples. |
26:36 | Then come with them doth Jesus to a place called Gethsemane, and he saith to the disciples, `Sit ye here, till having gone away, I shall pray yonder.' |
26:37 | And having taken Peter, and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful, and to be very heavy; |
26:38 | then saith he to them, `Exceedingly sorrowful is my soul -- unto death; abide ye here, and watch with me.' |
26:39 | And having gone forward a little, he fell on his face, praying, and saying, `My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou.' |
26:40 | And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them sleeping, and he saith to Peter, `So! ye were not able one hour to watch with me! |
26:41 | watch, and pray, that ye may not enter into temptation: the spirit indeed is forward, but the flesh weak.' |
26:42 | Again, a second time, having gone away, he prayed, saying, `My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from me except I drink it, Thy will be done;' |
26:43 | and having come, he findeth them again sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. |
26:44 | And having left them, having gone away again, he prayed a third time, saying the same word; |
26:45 | then cometh he unto his disciples, and saith to them, `Sleep on henceforth, and rest! lo, the hour hath come nigh, and the Son of Man is delivered up to the hands of sinners. |
26:46 | Rise, let us go; lo, he hath come nigh who is delivering me up.' |
26:47 | And while he is yet speaking, lo, Judas, one of the twelve did come, and with him a great multitude, with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and elders of the people. |
26:48 | And he who did deliver him up did give them a sign, saying, `Whomsoever I will kiss, it is he: lay hold on him;' |
26:49 | and immediately, having come to Jesus, he said, `Hail, Rabbi,' and kissed him; |
26:50 | and Jesus said to him, `Comrade, for what art thou present?' Then having come near, they laid hands on Jesus, and took hold on him. |
26:51 | And lo, one of those with Jesus, having stretched forth the hand, drew his sword, and having struck the servant of the chief priest, he took off his ear. |
26:52 | Then saith Jesus to him, `Turn back thy sword to its place; for all who did take the sword, by the sword shall perish; |
26:53 | dost thou think that I am not able now to call upon my Father, and He will place beside me more than twelve legions of messengers? |
26:54 | how then may the Writings be fulfilled, that thus it behoveth to happen?' |
26:55 | In that hour said Jesus to the multitudes, `As against a robber ye did come forth, with swords and sticks, to take me! daily with you I was sitting teaching in the temple, and ye did not lay hold on me; |
26:56 | but all this hath come to pass, that the Writings of the prophets may be fulfilled;' then all the disciples, having left him, fled. |
26:57 | And those laying hold on Jesus led `him' away unto Caiaphas the chief priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together, |
26:58 | and Peter was following him afar off, unto the court of the chief priest, and having gone in within, he was sitting with the officers, to see the end. |
26:59 | And the chief priests, and the elders, and all the council, were seeking false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death, |
26:60 | and they did not find; and many false witnesses having come near, they did not find; and at last two false witnesses having come near, |
26:61 | said, `This one said, I am able to throw down the sanctuary of God, and after three days to build it.' |
26:62 | And the chief priest having stood up, said to him, `Nothing thou dost answer! what do these witness against thee? |
26:63 | and Jesus was silent. And the chief priest answering said to him, `I adjure thee, by the living God, that thou mayest say to us, if thou art the Christ -- the Son of God.' |
26:64 | Jesus saith to him, `Thou hast said; nevertheless I say to you, hereafter ye shall see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the power, and coming upon the clouds, of the heaven.' |
26:65 | Then the chief priest rent his garments, saying, -- `He hath spoken evil; what need have we yet of witnesses? lo, now ye heard his evil speaking; |
26:66 | what think ye?' and they answering said, `He is worthy of death.' |
26:67 | Then did they spit in his face and buffet him, and others did slap, |
26:68 | saying, `Declare to us, O Christ, who he is that struck thee?' |
26:69 | And Peter without was sitting in the court, and there came near to him a certain maid, saying, `And thou wast with Jesus of Galilee!' |
26:70 | And he denied before all, saying, `I have not known what thou sayest.' |
26:71 | And he having gone forth to the porch, another female saw him, and saith to those there, `And this one was with Jesus of Nazareth;' |
26:72 | and again did he deny with an oath -- `I have not known the man.' |
26:73 | And after a little those standing near having come, said to Peter, `Truly thou also art of them, for even thy speech doth make thee manifest.' |
26:74 | Then began he to anathematise, and to swear -- `I have not known the man;' and immediately did a cock crow, |
26:75 | and Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, he having said to him -- `Before cock-crowing, thrice thou wilt deny me;' and having gone without, he did weep bitterly. |
26:1 | And it came to passe when Iesus had fynisshed all these sayinges he sayd vnto his disciples: |
26:2 | Ye knowe that after ii. dayes shalbe ester and the sonne of man shalbe delyvered to be crucified. |
26:3 | Then assembled togedder the chefe prestes and the scribes and the elders of the people to the palice of the hye preste called Cayphas |
26:4 | and heelde a counsell how they mygt take Iesus by suttelte and kyll him. |
26:5 | But they sayd not on the holy daye lest eny vproure aryse amonge the people. |
26:6 | When Iesus was in Bethany in the house of Symon the leper |
26:7 | ther came vnto him a woman which had an alablaster boxe of precious oyntment and powred it on his heed as he sate at the bourde. |
26:8 | When his disciples sawe that they had indignacion sayinge: what neded this wast? |
26:9 | This oyntmet myght have bene well solde and geven to the povre. |
26:10 | When Iesus vnderstod that he sayde vnto the: why trouble ye the woman? She hath wrought a good worke apon me. |
26:11 | For ye shall have povre folcke alwayes with you: but me shall ye not have all wayes. |
26:12 | And in yt she casted this oyntment on my bodye she dyd it to burye me wt all. |
26:13 | Verely I saye vnto you wheresoever this gospell shalbe preached throughoute all the worlde there shall also this that she hath done be tolde for a memoriall of her. |
26:14 | Then one of the twelve called Iudas Iscarioth went vnto the chefe prestes |
26:15 | and sayd: what will ye geve me and I will deliver him vnto you? And they apoynted vnto him thirty peces of sylver. |
26:16 | And from that tyme he sought oportunite to betraye him. |
26:17 | The fyrst daye of swete breed ye disciples cam to Iesus sayinge vnto him: where wylt thou that we prepare for ye to eate ye paschall lambe? |
26:18 | And he sayd: Go into the cite vnto soche a man and saye to him: the master sayeth my tyme is at hande I will kepe myne ester at thy housse with my disciples. |
26:19 | And the disciples did as Iesus had apoynted them and made redy the esterlambe. |
26:20 | When the even was come he sate doune wt the .xii. |
26:21 | And as they dyd eate he sayde: Verely I saye vnto you that one of you shall betraye me. |
26:22 | And they were excedinge sorowfull and beganne every one of the to saye vnto him: is it I master? |
26:23 | He answered and sayde: he yt deppeth his honde wt me in ye disshe the same shall betraye me. |
26:24 | The sonne of ma goeth as it is written of him: but wo be to yt ma by whom ye sonne of man shalbe betrayed. It had bene good for that man yf he had never bene borne. |
26:25 | Then Iudas wich betrayed him answered and sayde: is it I master? He sayde vnto him: thou hast sayde. |
26:26 | As they dyd eate Iesus toke breed and gave thankes brake it and gave it to the disciples and sayde: Take eate this is my body. |
26:27 | And he toke the cup and thanked and gave it them sayinge: drinke of it every one. |
26:28 | For this is my bloude of the new testament that shalbe shedde for many for the remission of synnes. |
26:29 | I saye vnto you: I will not drinke hence forth of this frute of the vyne tree vntyll that daye when I shall drinke it new with you in my fathers kyngdome. |
26:30 | And when they had sayde grace they went out into mounte olyvete. |
26:31 | Then sayd Iesus vnto them: all ye shall be offended by me this night. For it is wrytten. I will smyte ye shepe herde and the shepe of ye flocke shalbe scattered abroode. |
26:32 | But after I am rysen ageyne I will goo before you into Galile. |
26:33 | Peter answered and sayde vnto him: though all men shulde be offended by ye yet wolde I never be offended. |
26:34 | Iesus sayde vnto him. Verely I saye vnto ye that this same night before the cocke crowe thou shalt denye me thryse. |
26:35 | Peter sayde vnto him: Yf I shulde dye with ye yet wolde I not denye ye Lyke wyse also sayde all ye disciples. |
26:36 | Then went Iesus with them into a place which is called Gethsemane and sayde vnto the disciples syt ye here whyll I go and praye yonder. |
26:37 | And he toke with him Peter and the two sonnes of zebede and began to wexe sorowfull and to be in an agonye. |
26:38 | Then sayd Iesus vnto them: my soule is hevy even vnto the deeth. Tary ye here and watche wt me. |
26:39 | And he went a lytell aparte and fell flat on his face and prayed sayinge: O my father yf it be possible let this cuppe passe from me: neverthelesse not as I wyll but as thou wylt. |
26:40 | And he came vnto the disciples and founde them a slepe and sayde to Peter: what coulde ye not watche with me one houre: |
26:41 | watche and praye that ye fall not into temptacion. The spirite is willynge but the flesshe is weake. |
26:42 | He went awaye once moare and prayed sayinge: O my father yf this cuppe can not passe away from me but yt I drinke of it thy wyll be fulfylled. |
26:43 | And he came and founde the a slepe agayne. For their eyes were hevy. |
26:44 | And he lefte them and went agayne and prayed ye thrid tyme sayinge ye same wordes. |
26:45 | Then came he to his disciples and sayd vnto them: Slepe hence forth and take youre reest. Take hede the houre is at honde and ye sonne of man shalbe betrayed into ye hondes of synners. |
26:46 | Ryse let vs be goinge: beholde he is at honde yt shall betraye me. |
26:47 | Whyll he yet spake: lo Iudas one of ye xii. came and wt him a greate multitude wt sweardes and staves sent from the chefe prestes and elders of the people. |
26:48 | And he that betrayed him had geven the a token sayinge: whosoever I kysse yt same is he ley hondes on him. |
26:49 | And forth wt all he came to Iesus and sayde: hayle master and kyssed him. |
26:50 | And Iesus sayde vnto him: frende wherfore arte thou come? Then came they and layed hondes on Iesus and toke him. |
26:51 | And beholde one of them which were with Iesus stretched oute his honde and drue his swearde and stroke a servaunt of the hye preste and smote of his eare. |
26:52 | Then sayde Iesus vnto him: put vp thy swearde into his sheathe. For all that ley hond on ye swearde shall perisshe with ye swearde. |
26:53 | Ether thinkest thou that I cannot now praye to my father and he shall geve me moo then .xii. legions of angelles? |
26:54 | But how then shuld the scriptures be fulfylled: for so must it be. |
26:55 | The same tyme sayd Iesus to the multitude: ye be come out as it were vnto a thefe with sweardes and staves for to take me. I sate daylie teachinge in the temple amoge you and ye toke me not. |
26:56 | All this was done that the scriptures of the Prophetes myght be fulfilled. |
26:57 | Then all the disciples forsoke him and fleed. And they toke Iesus and leed him to Cayphas the hye preeste where the Scribes and the Elders where assembled. |
26:58 | And Peter folowed him a farre of vnto the hye prestes place: and went in and sate with the servauntes to se the ende. |
26:59 | The chefe prestes and the elders and all the counsell sought false witnes agenste Iesus for to put him to deeth |
26:60 | but founde none: in somoche that when many false witnesses cam yet founde they none. At the last came two false witnesses |
26:61 | and sayd: This felowe sayde: I can distroye the temple of God and bylde it agayne in .iii. dayes. |
26:62 | And the chefe preste arose and sayde to him: answerest thou nothinge? How is it yt these beare witnes ageynst the? |
26:63 | But Iesus helde his peace: And the chefe Preeste answered and sayd to him: I charge the in the name of the lyvinge God that thou tell vs whether thou be Christ the sonne of God. |
26:64 | Iesus sayd to him: thou haste sayd. Neverthelesse I saye vnto you hereafter shall ye se the sonne of ma syttinge on the right honde of power and come in the clowddes of the skye. |
26:65 | Then the hye preste rent his clothes sayinge: He hath blasphemed: what nede we of eny moo witnesses? Behold now ye have hearde his blasphemy: |
26:66 | what thinke ye? They answered and sayd: he his worthy to dye. |
26:67 | Then spat they in his face and boffeted him with fistes. And other smote him with the palme af their hondes |
26:68 | on ye face sayinge: tell vs thou Christ who is he that smote the? |
26:69 | Peter sate with out in the palice. And a damsell came to him sayinge: Thou also waste wt Iesus of Galilee: |
26:70 | but he denyed before the all sayinge: I woot not what thou sayst. |
26:71 | When he was goone out into the poorche another wenche sawe him and sayde vnto them that were there: This felowe was also with Iesus of Nazareth. |
26:72 | And agayne he denyed with an oothe that he knew the man. |
26:73 | And after a whyle came vnto him they yt stode bye and sayde vnto Peter: suerly thou arte even one of the for thy speache bewreyeth ye. |
26:74 | Then beganne he to course and to sweare that he knewe not the man. And immedyatly the cocke krewe. |
26:75 | And Peter remembred the wordes of Iesu which sayde vnto him: before the cocke crowe thou shalt deny me thryse: and went out at the dores and wepte bitterly. |
26:1 | And it came to passe wha Iesus had fynished all these wordes, he sayde vnto his disciples: |
26:2 | Ye knowe, that after two dayes shalbe Easter, and the sonne of man shalbe delyuered to be crucified. |
26:3 | Then assembled together the hye prestes and the scrybes, and the elders of the people in to the palace of the hye prest which was called Caiphas, |
26:4 | and helde a councell, how they might take Iesus by disceate, and kyll him. |
26:5 | But they sayde: Not on the holy daye, lest there be an vproure in the people. |
26:6 | Now when Iesus was at Bethany in the house of Symon the leper, |
26:7 | there came vnto hi a woman, which had a boxe with precious oyntment, and poured it vpon his heade, as he sat at the table. |
26:8 | Whan his disciples sawe that, they dissdayned, and sayde: Where to serueth this waist? |
26:9 | This oyntmet might haue bene wel solde, and geue to the poore. |
26:10 | Whe Iesus perceaued that, he sayde vnto them: Why trouble ye the woman? She hath wrought a good worke vpon me |
26:11 | for ye haue allwaye the poore with you, but me shal ye not haue allwayes. |
26:12 | Where as she hath poured this oyntmet vpon my body, she dyd it to bury me. |
26:13 | Verely I saye vnto you: where so euer this gospell shalbe preached thorow out all the worlde, there shal this also that she hath done, be tolde for a memoriall of her. |
26:14 | Then one of the twolue (called Iudas Iscarioth) wente vnto the hye prestes, |
26:15 | and sayde: What wil ye geue me, and I shal delyuer him vnto you? And they offred hi thirtie syluer pens. |
26:16 | And from that tyme forth, he sought oportunyte to betraye him? |
26:17 | The first daye of swete bred came the disciples to Iesus, and sayde vnto him: Where wilt thou that we prepare for the, to eate the Easter lambe? |
26:18 | He sayde: Go in to the cite to soch a man, and saye vnto him: The Master sendeth the worde: My tyme is at honde, I wil kepe myne Easter by the with my disciples. |
26:19 | And the disciples dyd as Iesus had appoynted them, and made ready the Easter lambe. |
26:20 | And at euen he sat downe at the table with the twolue. |
26:21 | And as they ate, he sayde: Verely I saye vnto you: One of you shal betraye me. |
26:22 | And they were exceadinge soroufull, and beganne euery one of them to saye vnto him: Syr, is it I? |
26:23 | He answered and sayde: He that deppeth his honde with me in the dysshe, the same shal betraye me. |
26:24 | The sonne of man goeth forth, as it is wrytten of him: but wo vnto that man by who the sonne of man shalbe betrayed: It had bene better for that ma, yf he had neuer bene borne. |
26:25 | The Iudas that betrayed him, answered and sayde: Master, is it I? He sayde vnto: him Thou hast sayde. |
26:26 | And as they ate, Iesus toke the bred, gaue thankes, brake it, and gaue it to the disciples, and sayde: Take, eate, this is my body. |
26:27 | And he toke the cuppe, and thanked, and gaue it the, and sayde: Drynke ye all therof, |
26:28 | this is my bloude of the new testament, that shalbe shed for many for the remission of synnes. |
26:29 | I saye vnto you: I wil not drynke hence forth of this frute of the vyne tre, vntill that daye that I shal drynke it new with you in my fathers kyngdome. |
26:30 | And whan they had sayde grace, they wente forth vnto mount Oliuete. |
26:31 | Then sayde Iesus vnto them. This night shal ye all be offended in me. For it is wrytten: I wil smyte the shepherde, and the shepe of the flocke shalbe scatered abrode. |
26:32 | But after that I ryse agayne, I wil go before you in to Galile. |
26:33 | Peter answered and sayde vnto him: Though all men shulde be offended in ye, yet wyl I neuer be offeded. |
26:34 | Iesus sayde vnto hi: Verely I saye vnto ye: This same night before ye cock crowe, shalt thou denie me thryse. |
26:35 | Peter saide vnto him: And though I shulde dye with the, yet wil I not denye the. Likewyse also sayde all the disciples. |
26:36 | Then came Iesus with them into a felde which is called Gethsemane, and sayde vnto the disciples: Syt ye here, whyle I go yonder & praye. |
26:37 | And he toke with him Peter, and the two sonnes of Zebede, and beganne to wexe soroufull and to be in an agonye. |
26:38 | Then sayde Iesus vnto them: My soule is heuy euen vnto the death. Tary ye here, and watch with me. |
26:39 | And he wente forth a litle, and fell flat vpon his face, and prayed sayenge: O my father, yf it be possible, let this cuppe passe fro me: neuertheles not as I wil but as thou wilt. |
26:40 | And he came to his disciples, and founde the a slepe, & sayde vnto Peter: What? coude ye not watch with me one houre? |
26:41 | Watch & praye, that ye fall not in to temptacion. The sprete is wyllinge, but the flesh is weake. |
26:42 | Agayne, he wete forth the seconde tyme and prayed, sayenge: O my father, yf this cuppe can not passe awaye fro me (excepte I drynke of it) thy will be fulfilled. |
26:43 | And he came, and founde them a slepe agayne, and their eyes were heuy. |
26:44 | And he left them, and wente forth agayne, and prayed the thirde tyme, sayenge the same wordes. |
26:45 | Then came he to his disciples, and sayde vnto them: Slepe on now, and take youre rest. Beholde, the houre is come, yt the sonne of man shalbe delyuered in to the hondes of synners: |
26:46 | Aryse, let us be goynge. Beholde, he is at hode, that betrayeth me. |
26:47 | Whyle he yet spake, lo, Iudas one of the twolue came, and with him a greate multitude with swerdes and staues, sent fro the hye prestes and elders of the people. |
26:48 | And he that betrayed him, had geuen them a toke, sayenge: Whom so euer I kysse, that same is he, laye hodes vpo him. |
26:49 | And forth withal he came to Iesus, and sayde: Hayle master, and kyssed him. |
26:50 | And Iesus sayde vnto him: Frende, wherfore art thou come? Then came they, and layed hondes vpon Iesus, and toke him. |
26:51 | And beholde, one of them that were with Iesus, stretched out his honde, and drue his swerde, and stroke a seruaunt of the hye prestes, & smote of his eare: |
26:52 | Then sayde Iesus vnto him: Put vp yi swerde in to his place. For all that take the swerde, shal perish with the swerde. |
26:53 | Or thinkest thou that I can not praye my father now, to sende me more then twolue legions of angels? |
26:54 | But how the shulde the scriptures be fulfylled? For thus must it be. |
26:55 | In the same houre sayde Iesus vnto the multitude: Ye are come out as it were to a murthurer with swerdes and staues for to take me. I sat daylie teachinge in the temple amonge you, and ye toke me not. |
26:56 | But all this is done, that the scriptures of the prophetes might be fulfylled. |
