80:1To the chaunter vpon Sosanim, a testimonye and Psalme of Asaph. Heare O thou shepherde of Israel, thou that leadest Ioseph lyke a shepe. shewe thy selfe also thou that syttest vpon the Cherubyns.
80:2Before Ephraim, Ben Iamin, and Manasses: stere vp thy strength, and come helpe vs.
80:3Turne vs agayne, O God, shewe the lyght of thy countenaunce, and we shalbe whole.
80:4O Lorde God of Hostes, how longe wilt thou be angry wyth thy people that prayeth?
80:5Thou fedest them with the bred of teares and geuest them plenteousnes of teares to dryncke.
80:6Thou hast made vs a very stryfe vnto oure neyghbours, and oure enemyes laugh vs to scorne.
80:7Turne vs agayne, thou God of Hostes, shewe the lyght of thy countenaunce, and we shalbe whole.
80:8Thou hast brought a vyne out of Egypte, thou hast cast out the Heathen, and planted it.
80:9Thou madest rowme for it: and whan it had taken rote it fylled the lande.
80:10The hylles were couered with the shadowe of it, and the bowes therof were lyke the goodly Cedre trees.
80:11She stretched out her braunches vnto the see, and her bowes vnto the ryuer.
80:12Why hast thou then broken downe her hedge, that all they whych go by, plucke of her grapes?
80:13The wylde bore out of the wood doth rote it vp, and the wylde beastes of the felde deuoureth it.
80:14Turne the agayne, thou God of Hostes, loke downe from heauen, beholde, and vyset thys vyne.
80:15And the place of the vynyarde that thy ryght hande hath planted, and the braunch that thou madest so stronge for thy selfe..
80:16It is brent wyth fyre, and cut downe: and they shall perysh at the rebuke of thy countenaunce.
80:17Let thy hand be vpon the man of thy ryght hande, & vpon the sonne of man whom thou madest so strong for thyne awne selfe.
80:18And so will not we go back from the: Oh let vs lyue, & we shall call vpon thy mame.
80:19Turne vs agayne, O Lorde God of Hostes, shewe the lyght of thy countenaunce, & we shalbe whole.
The Great Bible 1539

The Great Bible 1539

The Great Bible of 1539 was the first authorized edition of the Bible in English, authorized by King Henry VIII of England to be read aloud in the church services of the Church of England. The Great Bible was prepared by Myles Coverdale, working under commission of Thomas, Lord Cromwell, Secretary to Henry VIII and Vicar General. In 1538, Cromwell directed the clergy to provide "one book of the bible of the largest volume in English, and the same set up in some convenient place within the said church that ye have care of, whereas your parishioners may most commodiously resort to the same and read it."
