2 Kings - Chapter: 1

>
1:1Then Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.
1:2And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease.
1:3But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron?
1:4Now therefore thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Elijah departed.
1:5And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back?
1:6And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that thou sendest to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
1:7And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words?
1:8And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.
1:9Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down.
1:10And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
1:11Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly.
1:12And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
1:13And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.
1:14Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight.
1:15And the angel of the LORD said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.
1:16And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
1:17So he died according to the word of the LORD which Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram reigned in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no son.
1:18Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

 
1:1ויפשׁע מואב בישׂראל אחרי מות אחאב׃
1:2ויפל אחזיה בעד השׂבכה בעליתו אשׁר בשׁמרון ויחל וישׁלח מלאכים ויאמר אלהם לכו דרשׁו בבעל זבוב אלהי עקרון אם אחיה מחלי זה׃
1:3ומלאך יהוה דבר אל אליה התשׁבי קום עלה לקראת מלאכי מלך שׁמרון ודבר אלהם המבלי אין אלהים בישׂראל אתם הלכים לדרשׁ בבעל זבוב אלהי עקרון׃
1:4ולכן כה אמר יהוה המטה אשׁר עלית שׁם לא תרד ממנה כי מות תמות וילך אליה׃
1:5וישׁובו המלאכים אליו ויאמר אליהם מה זה שׁבתם׃
1:6ויאמרו אליו אישׁ עלה לקראתנו ויאמר אלינו לכו שׁובו אל המלך אשׁר שׁלח אתכם ודברתם אליו כה אמר יהוה המבלי אין אלהים בישׂראל אתה שׁלח לדרשׁ בבעל זבוב אלהי עקרון לכן המטה אשׁר עלית שׁם לא תרד ממנה כי מות תמות׃
1:7וידבר אלהם מה משׁפט האישׁ אשׁר עלה לקראתכם וידבר אליכם את הדברים האלה׃
1:8ויאמרו אליו אישׁ בעל שׂער ואזור עור אזור במתניו ויאמר אליה התשׁבי הוא׃
1:9וישׁלח אליו שׂר חמשׁים וחמשׁיו ויעל אליו והנה ישׁב על ראשׁ ההר וידבר אליו אישׁ האלהים המלך דבר רדה׃
1:10ויענה אליהו וידבר אל שׂר החמשׁים ואם אישׁ אלהים אני תרד אשׁ מן השׁמים ותאכל אתך ואת חמשׁיך ותרד אשׁ מן השׁמים ותאכל אתו ואת חמשׁיו׃
1:11וישׁב וישׁלח אליו שׂר חמשׁים אחר וחמשׁיו ויען וידבר אליו אישׁ האלהים כה אמר המלך מהרה רדה׃
1:12ויען אליה וידבר אליהם אם אישׁ האלהים אני תרד אשׁ מן השׁמים ותאכל אתך ואת חמשׁיך ותרד אשׁ אלהים מן השׁמים ותאכל אתו ואת חמשׁיו׃
1:13וישׁב וישׁלח שׂר חמשׁים שׁלשׁים וחמשׁיו ויעל ויבא שׂר החמשׁים השׁלישׁי ויכרע על ברכיו לנגד אליהו ויתחנן אליו וידבר אליו אישׁ האלהים תיקר נא נפשׁי ונפשׁ עבדיך אלה חמשׁים בעיניך׃
1:14הנה ירדה אשׁ מן השׁמים ותאכל את שׁני שׂרי החמשׁים הראשׁנים ואת חמשׁיהם ועתה תיקר נפשׁי בעיניך׃
1:15וידבר מלאך יהוה אל אליהו רד אותו אל תירא מפניו ויקם וירד אותו אל המלך׃
1:16וידבר אליו כה אמר יהוה יען אשׁר שׁלחת מלאכים לדרשׁ בבעל זבוב אלהי עקרון המבלי אין אלהים בישׂראל לדרשׁ בדברו לכן המטה אשׁר עלית שׁם לא תרד ממנה כי מות תמות׃
1:17וימת כדבר יהוה אשׁר דבר אליהו וימלך יהורם תחתיו בשׁנת שׁתים ליהורם בן יהושׁפט מלך יהודה כי לא היה לו בן׃
1:18ויתר דברי אחזיהו אשׁר עשׂה הלוא המה כתובים על ספר דברי הימים למלכי ישׂראל׃

 
1:1And Moab transgresseth against Israel after the death of Ahab,
1:2and Ahaziah falleth through the lattice in his upper chamber that `is' in Samaria, and is sick, and sendeth messengers, and saith unto them, `Go ye, inquire of Baal-Zebub god of Ekron if I recover from this sickness.'
1:3And a messenger of Jehovah hath spoken unto Elijah the Tishbite, `Rise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and speak unto them, Is it because there is not a God in Israel -- ye are going to inquire of Baal Zebub god of Ekron?
1:4and therefore, thus said Jehovah, The bed whither thou hast gone up, thou dost not come down from it, for thou dost certainly die;' and Elijah goeth on.
1:5And the messengers turn back unto him, and he saith unto them, `What `is' this -- ye have turned back!'
1:6And they say unto him, `A man hath come up to meet us, and saith unto us, Go, turn back unto the king who sent you, and ye have said unto him, Thus said Jehovah, Is it because there is not a God in Israel -- thou art sending to inquire of Baal-Zebub god of Ekron? therefore, the bed whither thou hast gone up, thou dost not come down from it, for thou dost certainly die.'
1:7And he saith unto them, `What `is' the fashion of the man who hath come up to meet you, and speaketh unto you these words?'
1:8And they say unto him, `A man -- hairy, and a girdle of skin girt about his loins;' and he saith, `He `is' Elijah the Tishbite.'
1:9And he sendeth unto him a head of fifty and his fifty, and he goeth up unto him (and lo, he is sitting on the top of the hill), and he speaketh unto him, `O man of God, the king hath spoken, Come down.'
1:10And Elijah answereth and speaketh unto the head of the fifty, `And if I `am' a man of God, fire doth come down from the heavens, and consume thee and thy fifty;' and fire cometh down from the heavens, and consumeth him and his fifty.
1:11And he turneth and sendeth unto him another head of fifty and his fifty, and he answereth and speaketh unto him, `O man of God, thus said the king, Haste, come down.'
1:12And Elijah answereth and speaketh unto them, `If I `am' a man of God, fire doth come down from the heavens, and consume thee and thy fifty;' and fire of God cometh down from the heavens, and consumeth him and his fifty.
1:13And he turneth and sendeth a third head of fifty and his fifty, and the third head of fifty goeth up, and cometh in, and boweth on his knees over-against Elijah, and maketh supplication unto him, and speaketh unto him, `O man of God, let be precious, I pray thee, my soul and the soul of thy servants -- these fifty -- in thine eyes.
1:14Lo, come down hath fire from the heavens, and consumeth the two heads of the former fifties and their fifties; and, now, let my soul be precious in thine eyes.'
1:15And a messenger of Jehovah speaketh unto Elijah, `Go down with him, be not afraid of him;' and he riseth and goeth down with him unto the king,
1:16and speaketh unto him, `Thus said Jehovah, Because that thou hast sent messengers to inquire of Baal-Zebub god of Ekron -- is it because there is not a God in Israel to inquire of His word? therefore, the bed whither thou hast gone up -- thou dost not come down from it, for thou dost certainly die.'
1:17And he dieth, according to the word of Jehovah that Elijah spake, and Jehoram reigneth in his stead, in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, for he had no son.
1:18And the rest of the matters of Ahaziah that he did, are they not written on the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?
